General Questions

What is Earnscleugh Castle?

Why is the property protected under a Category 1 Heritage listing?

This prestigious protection recognises Earnscleugh Castle outstanding historical and architectural value, from its rare “Jacobethan” style, uncommon for a sheep station, to its role in Central Otago’s pastoral saga. As a cultural treasure tied to the region’s gold rush and economic challenges, it preserves a unique slice of New Zealand’s frontier legacy for future generations. It is currently being lovingly transformed into luxury accommodation for regional visitors.

Who owns Earnscleugh Castle now?

Ryan Sanders and Marco Creemers purchased the property in 2022. They’re passionately restoring this heritage icon while honouring its legacy, which has been filmed for a 2026 TV production.

What TV production is filming the renovation?

Grand Designs New Zealand and is airing on April 12, 2026. We are extremely excited to share how we have transformed this beautiful piece of New Zealand heritage into both our home whilst also offering premium Central Otago luxury accommodation with our our Castle Suites and Rooms, as well as the Coach House.

When are the renovations due to be completed?

The internal renovations are due to be completed by the end of 2025. External renovations such as plastering, a solar farm and other additions, will be completed in 2026.

How close is Earnscleugh Castle to Clyde?

Earnscleugh Castle is under 5 minutes’ drive away. Whether you’re cycling the Otago Rail Trail, exploring the region’s vineyards, or just looking for a unique place to stay in Central Otago, we are ideally located.

How many guests can the Coach House accommodate?

The Coach House comfortably sleeps 6 guests across 3 bedrooms, making it perfect for family trips, a romantic weekend getaway for couples or small groups.

Is the Castle or the Coach House pet-friendly?

Unfortunately, whilst we love animals, we are not pet friendly.

This is because our own two French Bulldogs, Jake and George, roam the property and share the estate with our Valais sheep, which you can hand-feed. You may also spot pheasants and quail wandering freely. For these reasons, we can’t accommodate guest pets, even though we’re animal lovers ourselves.
